The North of Market/Tenderloin Community Benefit district is asking for anyone that was lucky enough to experience the Black Hawk night club to come forward with stories about one of the most famous Jazz Clubs of the 1950s.
From 1949 to 1963 the Black Hawk hosted the most famous artists of the era where many found the experience worthy of producing a live record which became quintessential to the artist's careers. Cal Tjader, Thelonius Monk, Shelly Manne and Miles Davis are some of the many musicians that regularly played and have live recordings from the club.
The TCB is looking to help revitalize the district through bringing light to the cultural history of the area that was prevalent throughout the 1940s to 1960s explained Elaine Azamora the district manager of the organization.
The theaters and clubs that were once a part of a vibrant art scene and night life are largely run down, vacant or replaced by other businesses.
